KZN Inland hockey boys capped

The pride of our School

AS A FITTING TESTIMONY to the wonderful success of hockey at St Charles College this season, 13 of our 16 hockey boys received the recognition they deserved this evening by being capped at a ceremony at Maritzburg College to the various KZN Inland teams into which the have been selected. The team details are at the foot of this page (May 31 story).

It was very gratifying to see them receive the recognition which they battled all season to achieve.

Well done boys! We're PROUD of you. VERY !

Clifton Schools descend en masse

Huge crowd, warm sun, satisfying results

OLD BOYS' DAY IS ALWAYS a logistical challenge for the Head of Sport, Mr Dave Karlsen. He and his team did superbly to bring together some 24 rugby matches and five hockey games today, Saturday, with nine hockey fixtures yesterday.

The opponents were mainly from Clifton College, Durban, and for the Prep School, we hosted Clifton Nottingham Road for the morning. Therefore, gathered around Harwin field were some 2000 people in the warm sunshine with a slight breeze from the north-east.

We always love the Prep School's mini-rugby games which provide an amusing curtain-raiser. The boys enjoy it hugely as the photos below so clearly illustrate.

Earlier in the day the Prep boys played games against the boys from Nottingham Road. Rugby is improving in leaps and bounds in our Prep School with the results against some enormously talented Clifton boys a lot closer than they were last year. The Junior First XV took a long while to settle down - but once they overcame their imagined fears, they brought home two tries (Samuel Hines and Declan Cox) to finish the encounter 10-22. What they just couldn't overcome were the superb left-boot kicks from the Clifton fly-half lurking behind the scrum - he was a pleasure to watch - tactically superb.

In the morning the U15Bs and U15As had a run on Crookes. The encounters finished off the season with a pleasing win for the A-team, and a narrow loss against the Thomas More U15A vs the Saints' B side.

The Second XV played a contented game against their opposite numbers from Lambert Road, Durban, to come away with 38-0 win. Tries were courtesy of Matthew Cope off a move from Daniel du Plessis and Juan Wessels. In the second half Daniel Moxham scored a try, as did Keith Sithole, Bruce Scott, and Marco Fardella twice. Penalties and conversion were off the boot of Daniel Capsopolos. With all the Daniels in the action in this game, Clifton could have been forgiven for thinking they'd landed in the lion's den.

Some lions. Some roars - as the St Charles College spectators, helped at times by the Old Boys seated in numbers next to the boys, gave the best renderings of the warcries this season.

The First XV game was a jittery affair initially with Clifton dominating in the early encounters. St Charles College did not need a penalty against them early on, but it was soon countered by three points from a growing-in-confidence Burton Weakley. Kwenzo Majola opened the scoring with an unconverted try in the corner. Some 20 minutes into the half, Weakley kicked the luckiest of penalties - which hit the cross bar and bounced over to take the score to 11-3 ahead of the break.

The second half saw two penalties go wide for Clifton - and then the game was on. The Saints shrugged off the bogey on their backs and attacked the Clifton line relentlessly. Kwenzo Majola brought home another 5 points, followed by great running rugby from Andrew Botha who dotted down between the posts for Weakley to convert. Having threatened to score all afternoon, it was finally the turn of Vincent Potgieter to score which was converted to take the full-time score to 30-3

Thanks to Maritzburg College for the hockey and rugby fixtures today, Thomas More and Glenwood for rugby teams, Clifton College, Durban and Clifton Preparatory School, Nottingham Road. We look forward to a fruitful association with Clifton College in the years ahead as their rugby grows in stature.

Thanks to all the staff for their input today on and off the field. Well done to all the boys, well played to all, and to the teams which won, well done.

And so the curtain comes down on the Senior School's rugby and hockey season as the holidays beckon a week hence ahead of FIFA's World Cup.

Sun about to set on hockey season

Clifton College hockey matches

SUNSET FOR THE HOCKEY BOYS at St Charles College this afternoon. Playing against the boys from Clifton College, Durban, the Saint did not have any easy games on their hands as the U14s, U16s and Open sides met a physical brand of Durban hockey on our fields. The U16s came away with a score line of 2-2 with goals from Robin Mitchell and Warwick Dukes.

The First XI Saints were up against a side with quite a reputation for good results. Within minutes the Saints were all over the visitors with a ball deflected from the upright of the goal and other strong attacks on goal. The scoreline of 3-3 did not really do the hosts justice as they had substantially possession and control than did the visitors.

Noted and appreciated was the support and warcries from the St Charles College Grade 8, 9 and 10 boys as they got behind the northern goal - and their team. There was, in fact, a very large crowd of some 500 people gathered around Saints Hockey this afternoon proving that there is huge interest in this game.

Thanks for the visit, Clifton College. It is great to see the way you've developed over the years and we look forward to many more exciting tussles against you in the future. Well played all. It's been a fabulous season for the Saints one way or another with hockey developing superbly as a consequence of the artificial surface in our front yard. It's gratifying to know that the continuity brought to the game by First XI coach, Andy McIntosh, will continue next season.

Right Prep! Saints Hockey field is over to you boys. Bring it home!

Time for some great hockey news

Seventeen players into Inland teams

SEVENTEEN ST CHARLES COLLEGE HOCKEY BOYS received news in the past fortnight that they have been selected to various KZN Inland hockey teams.

The U18A team has Saints, Tuks Khumalo, Uli Fischer and Mzamo Cele, while Gareth Rall, Keagan Davids and Joel Barron (goalie) are into the U18B team.

The U16B squad sees the inclusion of Stuart Armstrong at goalie, and Andrew Darroch, Wiaan Luttig, Pavi Indrajith and Kalin Nundlall.

The U14 teams see Eric de Rauville into the Inland A side, and Tim Kirkman and Marc Knobel into the B side.

And in the Prep School, Inland U13B has Michael Darroch and Luke Barnard, while the U12A sees Brad Sherwood as part of the squad.

Fabulous news hockey boys! Well done! Good luck!

Sadly, Michael Esteves, whose photo is above, is not in any of those squads but this photographic adaptation of him in action is irresistible in this context.
